Over the past decade, thousands of writers have parlayed established influence into traditional book deals. Landing a traditional book deal is still an effective way to exponentially increase your credibility and visibility.
Your “platform” refers to what you do in the world with your professional expertise that makes you visible and influential in the world. Having friends on Facebook or followers on Twitter is not your platform, unless the majority of those people know who you are, what you do, and are enthusiastic about your work.
I thought I would offer some advice about how to slowly and steadily establish a lasting platform. You may note the lack of fanaticism in this advice and the emphasis on enduring success instead. I’m a mother and a wife, a freelancer, a speaker, a teacher, and a blogger, so aiming for balance is the only way I can afford to work if I plan on sticking around for the long haul.

This advice has worked consistently for my students over the past several years. I think you will find that a grounded, step-by-step approach works just as well for you if you choose to follow it:

1. Develop a platform topic that you love and can work on tirelessly for the next few years. Your passion of the moment should come in second to the topic you could delve into deeply for a good, long time. Prior professional education and a depth of personal experience are going to be a boon to your platform if you have an eye on a future book deal.
2. Hang back from establishing a blog on your topic until you have cultivated a wealth of content and experience working with others on specialty-related activities that lend credibility and trust to your name. Others will tell you to start blogging immediately, but don’t, if you want to be efficient with your time and money.
3. Instead, gain authority by seeking publication in established, highly visible publications both in print and online that serve your target audience. Avoid the kind of publishing that anyone can accomplish, like posting on article sites, and work on your professional communication skills instead. By all means, avoid the content mills offering writers slave wages with the promise of future earnings.
4. Don’t begin any kind of marketing campaign for any product or service offerings until you have established yourself as a go-to person on your topic, again saving you time and money. Before you look at ways to serve others directly, channel your expertise into the best service methods possible based on your strengths and weaknesses. This is a meaty topic that is covered in-depth in my book, Get Known Before the Book Deal, Use Your Personal Strengths to Grow an Author Platform (Writer’s Digest Books 2008).
5. Then, develop a product or service that can become one of several multiple income streams over time that will support your goal of becoming a published author. For example, teaching classes over the years has allowed me to re-invest more of the money I earn from writing books back into book marketing. Make sure any offerings you produce are released conscientiously and are integrated into the professional writing you already do. Otherwise, you will seem like you are all over the place and just trying to score a buck.
6. Don’t expect your platform to support you financially for at least one or two years, as you micro-invest in it, re-invest in it as it grows, and expand your visibility.
7. Once you have a professional publication track record in your niche topic, then it’s time to hang your online shingle. I’ve seen this accomplished in as little as six months by exceptionally focused students. Take a portion of the money you’ve earned writing and invest it in a professional quality online presence.
8. A low-cost way to do this is to purchase your name as a URL and use a hosting site like GoDaddy.com to host a Wordpress.org blog. I use the Thesis Theme, which you can see in action at my blog. In this way, a blog can also serve as your website where you post your published clips, offerings and bio. If you don’t have a ton of money to invest in the look of your site, you can always pay a designer later.
9. Delay partnering with others on joint ventures until you have a clear idea of your own strengths and weaknesses in and around your topic. And when you do partner with others be extremely discriminating. Make sure the partnership is going to be win-win-win for everyone involved.
10. Start an e-mail newsletter or e-zine with those who are most interested in your topic. Build your list by invitation and then grow it into a permission-based following over time. Create an expected, ongoing dialogue that is mutually beneficial to everyone involved and your list will grow.
11. Now you are ready to start blogging. And yes, I mean while you continue to do all the things we’ve already discussed. Be sure to zoom-focus your blog on what you have to add to the conversation that is already going on about your topic. Don’t just share information; make an impact. Make your blog a go-to, up-to-date resource for your audience.
12. Partner selectively with others who serve the same general audience that you do with integrity and humility. Spend time getting to know folks before you decide to partner with them. You can’t afford to taint the reputation you have worked so hard to establish by partnering with just anyone.
13. Now that you have an established niche and audience, definitely participate in social networking. I like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn because they all offer something unique. The best way to learn is to jump in, spend an hour online each week until you are up and running. Follow the instructions for getting started provided by social media expert Meryl K. Evans.

This start-up plan for a writer platform will eventually blossom into an author platform. From start to finish, implementing a solid platform following this advice should take you about a year. By the end of that year, you will have established yourself as a serious contender in both professional and online circles, without killing yourself for some huckster’s promise of overnight success.

Have a plan. Leave a legacy in words, connections and professional influence. If you are consistent, by the time the year is done, you will have made effective use of your time and money in 2010. I wish you the best of luck in your platform-building efforts!

Christina Katz is the author of Get Known Before the Book Deal, Use Your Personal Strengths to Grow an Author Platform and Writer Mama, How to Raise a Writing Career Alongside Your Kids for Writer’s Digest Books.

Too many people; Too much pollution; Not enough time; Too much greed; Too much…Too little…Too much…Too little…On and on like a pendulum it goes.

Oh Dr. Seuss, where are you when I need you?

“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple,” Seuss chortles in my ear.

Sigh…

Then something happens to get my attention, to pull me out of my early morning depressed stupor.

“What was that? Ah, yea, I Remember now.”

My hand is stopped in mid-air reaching for a jar mayonnaise on the top shelf of the refrigerator. I can feel a place at the top of my heart, near my sternum. The angels are talking to me again.

It’s something that happens when I genuinely ask Spirit a question. Oddly enough, Spirit ALWAYS answers and often sounds a whole hell of a lot like Dr. Seuss .

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not,” the wise one says.

But I am overwhelmed by a mountain of unfinished tasks. I’ve been floundering in a muck of futility. “I need some sun,” I try to convince myself. “That’ll cheer me up. Pump up my serotonin levels.” And with that egoic nudge to my gluts I’m tumbling down the slippery slope of “I need…,” self prescribing things, people and experiences that will make me happy, fulfilled and content.

That is, until I feel The Breath in my face. I’ve actually asked for angelic assist on this…Asked them to apply the spiritual shock collar when I’ve again wrapped myself around the “I need…” axle.

The Breath

I remember taking my children to a community sponsored event to create child safety portfolios. These were supposed to come in handy if our children were ever abducted. Scary thought. Scary enough to fill a local school’s lunch room with fearful young mothers and their toddlers. The portfolios would contain our children’s fingerprint cards and Polaroid pictures. It seemed important and relevant at the time.

In that odd and fearful environment a spontaneous silence took hold, thick and anxious. Crashing through that silent window came a sound like a melon hitting concrete. The silence turned into a vacuum sucking my attention toward a mother picking her toddler up from a crumpled heap on the floor. She held him high in the air like a young child would hold a limp cat, mirroring the blue frozen shock on her baby’s face. The little boy had fallen off of a bench and landed on the back of his head. Though there was no blood, his face was frozen in a scream, stuck like a screen door with a faulty pneumatic closer.

Though I knew this woman to be very capable, she was momentarily paralyzed. “He won’t breathe!” she finally wailed. “He won’t breathe!”

I yelled at her from across the room, “Blow in his face!” But she remained as still as her baby. “Blow—in--his--FACE!” I yelled louder. She finally recognized the bellowed instruction and blew forcefully into the small scrunched blue face. The baby inhaled sharply.

I’ve heard it’s an instinct response but I’ve never researched it. I just know my mother taught the trick to me and it worked. I’m sure my mother was taught by someone else, who was taught by someone else, who passed the knowledge on.

Angelic Assist

Knowing full well that this works, I’ve given the angels permission to use it on me when they need to get my attention. And they do.

“It's a troublesome world. All the people who're in it
are troubled with troubles almost every minute.
You ought to be thankful, a whole heaping lot,
for the places and people you're lucky you're not.”

Have I mentioned that the angels adore Seuss? Yea, well, here’s the deal - Why reinvent the wheel? I also find they enjoy rhetorical humor, at least the ones who hang out around me.

“Thank goodness for all of the things you are not!
Thank goodness you're not something someone forgot,
and left all alone in some punkerish place
like a rusty tin coat hanger hanging in space.
Thats why I say "Duckie!
Don't grumble! Don't stew!
Some critters are much-much,
oh, ever so much-much,
so muchly much-much more unlucky than you!”

I can’t help it, I am forced to smile. My Uncle Whitie could do that – make me smile when I’d been on the edge of tears seconds earlier. Maybe my Uncle Whitie has been coaching the angels.

I’m back standing in front of the refrigerator in my robe, hand reaching toward the mayonnaise.

As I touch the cold shelf in front of me I feel The Breath and inhale. I remember why I am here. I am present and listening closely to my heart. I remember that is where my Truth is. That is where the idea that I am separate from God has no foothold. It is where I find a deep and respectful Love for myself and the world I have co-created – sometimes intentionally and sometimes thoughtlessly. The Breath reawakens me.

“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You!”

I grab the mayonnaise and finish making my daughter’s sandwich. I notice the smell of the bread, the sweetness of the fresh strawberries and the coolness of the yoghurt container in my hand. Rather than rushing through putting her lunch together, I begin to enjoy it. I smell the fresh coffee and feel eyes on me. I turn around to see our dog, Belle, standing near lending her support.

What about all of those things that you need to do?” my ego whines at me. “Doesn’t that STRESS YOU OUT?”

Well, yea, it did before the angels reminded me that being present in every moment is the only thing that I REALLY need to do.

But, damn, priorities are double edged and sharp. I think I’m on top of things when I build a task list, prioritize them and insert neat little boxes to be checked off at completion. That approach seems to make sense, but I find myself listening to angels instead. As messengers for Spirit, they have a much different agenda, and it never seems to match my task list. So, seldom do the tasks get done completely. Guilt seeps in…and I succumb once again to the Great Forgetting.

“I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!”

When will the vicious cycle end? When will the Great Forgetting stop? When will I be strong enough in Spirit to Remember for more than a few measly seconds before guilt, worry and insecurity seep in?

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.”

“That’s the trouble, isn’t it? This whole cycle of needs and wants, desires and demands, the constant striving for a thing we call “happiness” that falls so short of the joy possible if our hearts were only tuned to Spirit.

That leads me to the practical yet sad truth behind The Law of Attraction, the phenomenon enticingly explained to the world by Rhonda Byrne, author of The Secret. The truth is we can manifest anything in our imagination. The Law of Attraction is as real a universal law as gravity. But, there is a dark side. Or, as my friend Aisha explains, a duality that we often fail to consider. There is always, without fail, a consequence for everything we do, say and think. It’s Quantum in nature. But, that’s another story…

The Truth of Yuzz…

And there is a larger consideration. The idea that just because there is desire coupled with the ability to manifest that it is the wise thing to do. I will repeat this because it’s the most profound thought God has gifted me with today – My imagination, and my idea of what is best for me falls far, far short of what God has in mind. My conscious imagination is fetal and limited, though I wish that were not true.

Why then, would I not wait to see what Spirit would manifest on my behalf? Sounds simple enough, but it strikes terror in my heart.

Wait? Don’t lay down any plan? Stand at the mouth of the void expectantly? I think I would feel safer standing naked on the side of a busy highway.

“My alphabet starts with this letter called yuzz. It's the letter I use to spell yuzz-a-ma-tuzz. You'll be sort of surprised what there is to be found once you go beyond 'Z' and start poking around!”

So, I’ll wait here…and try very hard to Remember to Remember to Remember…and be grateful for patient angels who utilize the wisdom of Dr. Seuss to comfort and encourage me.

“Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So... get on your way.”

“And will you succeed? Yes indeed, yes indeed! Ninety-eight and three-quarters percent guaranteed!”

~~~~~~
Quotes are from various Dr. Seuss books from my youth. I am forever grateful to Dr. Seuss for his creative healing.
Withholding judgment ~ Finding Solutions to Teenage Bullying
by Shari Downhill
The case of a bullied teenage girl who took her own life has grabbed attention across the U.S. The death of Phoebe Prince has resulted in the indictment of nine of her high school peers in the South Hadley , MA with additional indictments expected. The Prince case is intriguing not because its uniqueness, but because it is so common. The question is - why the media attention now for something that’s been going on for ages?
South Hadley has become a fish bowl with thousands of harpoon pointing fingers demanding retribution – fingers pointing away from the only real solution. Only by accepting personal responsibility can we heal and effect change in our own communities and homes. That's a solution. Pointing at the “monstrous” behavior of others and shoving the responsibility of a collective culture that perpetuates and condones bullying at all levels far away from our own doorstep accomplishes exactly two things: Perpetual Victimhood and Ethical Impotence.
How could I say this? Isn’t it easier to recall and recount gut wrenching incidents of being bullied in school?
Isn’t it also true too that none of us can escape a nagging memory of treating someone else unfairly? Of whispering cruelties? Of acting vengefully as a teenager? …and as adults?
Guilty.
So, now what?
Rather than concentrating venomous judgment on a community and school that is no different than our own, we model the change this country is demanding of South Hadley. We learn to understand the devastating effects of bullying, how to recognize it in our schools, our children and ourselves. We recognize that teenage girls are just as effective at bullying as teenage boys are, and some would argue, even more so. Culture driven mandates that “girls are supposed to be nice” have only served to redirect their aggression down avenues at times more torturous than the fist fights teenage boys openly engage in.
In “Odd Girl Out” and “Odd Girl Speaks Out” Rachel Simmons delves into female bullying, putting a face on an underground culture of girls’ abuse of girls. Simmons travels across the country speaking to girls, parents, teachers and coaches on female aggression, naming the demons and dragging them out into the light.
“Dirty looks, taunting notes, exclusion from social groups – there is a hidden culture of girls’ aggression in our schools that is as widespread as it is painful,” Simmons says. Through first person case studies, Simmons goes beyond anecdotal surface assumptions, sharing insights that parents, teachers and coaches can use to better guide young girls and young women.
Beyond the immediate symptom of bullying, MA based writer and artist Daniel Brown says teenagers need to be encouraged to acknowledge the disturbing thoughts that haunt them. “Young people should be encouraged to communicate the darker emotions that roil their minds instead of having them medicated or denied,” Brown suggested in a recent essay about the South Hadley incident. “Instead of embracing a dead-end culture of victimhood, we should give even the meekest of kids the mental and verbal tools that will teach them how to defend themselves when they are falsely accused or verbally assaulted.”
Joining with many others calling for a stop to the South Hadley “witch hunt,” Brown says adult modeling would go a long way towards showing young people appropriate ways of handling frustration, disagreements, jealousy and anger – all natural occurrences in social group settings. All too often teenagers witness their own parents engaged in similarly cruel and callous behaviors as those that reportedly led to Phoebe Prince’s suicide. Unintentional modeling is perpetuated by teenagers who view it – however aggressive, cruel and destructive – as an acceptable option.
The answer lies in our own homes and in our relationship with our own children. Humility and a willingness to recognize our own shortcomings…and being willing to talk about them is one simple first step. Pulling back the finger of accusation is the second.
(c) 2010 Shari Downhill
The Meditation Hour - Starting the Day Well
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NGKUaj0Xltc/Sq5QzZLeBoI/AAAAAAAAAZs/hkP1jySRHAQ/s1600-h/ph_landing_woman.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; But there’s something about the stillness of the early hours that actually helps me through the rest of the day.
I have been meditating for a little over a year now using Bill Harris’ Holosync & Centerpointe Institute. Before using Holosynch I had a hard time allowing myself to fully relax for my meditation period. Using Holosync I can much more quickly and easily move down into a quiet and productive meditative state.
Holosync is based on Dr. Gerald Oster's original research and Centerpointe’s own research and experimentation. They’ve created a very powerful audio technology which is placed inaudibly beneath peaceful music and environmental sounds. Many people call it "instant meditation"—but it's much more than that.
There is extensive research available both on Centerpointe’s website and other unassociated support websites which explains the binaural technology used in the Holosynch program. Harris’ Holosync site also provides a Holosync blog as well as an archived library of research articles, and pod casts you can retrieve from iTunes. It’s all really good stuff, if sometimes a bit overwhelming.
Still, Holosync has helped me think more clearly and navigate further over the bridge in the understanding what this existence is really all about.
The Expanding Social Media Universe
Just a few short months ago Twitter was confounding to me. I had no idea why ANYONE would even care about it. Now? I’m engaged in a several week long online social media class learning not only about Twitter, but about Facebook, LinkedIn, social media triangulation, strategy and planning.
The first question most of us seem to be asking is: Why should I even CARE about social media as a serious business marketing strategy?
Why? Because networking and interconnectivity provides an opportunity for me to reach out as far as I possibly can into my world. It expands my physical universe beyond almost any borders I can think of. It blows the doors off of what before I considered formidable entrepreneurial hurdles.
While it’s still admittedly easy to get lost in the seemingly endless social media rabbit holes - alluring websites, industry forums, updates, downloads, & all things new and flashy in the IT world, I’ve found specialists in the area of self pacing and self control who’ve coached me through the thick of it. I no longer feel like I’m teetering on the edge of the information abyss. Now, I watch and listen before I plunge. And when I jump…I’m thoroughly loving the experience.
John Souza and his crew at Social Media Magic University offers a great series of classes on fully utilizing social media/networking for business development. I just finished the second of 11 sessions and believe I've already achieved 100% ROI for what I initially spent on registration.
The first thing I would recommend you do (this is going to blow you away...) Do what’s called a “Vanity Search” on yourself or your company. Go ahead. Google yourself.
I was FLOORED to see over 300,000 Google hits on my name alone. As I started making my way through them, I was amazed at what was floating around out there on the web about me. Fortunately, the vast majority of it related to my writing and business life. But, wouldn’t it be good to know if something was out there that could potentially affect your business or consultancy in a negative way? In my next blog post I’ll introduce a subject matter expert who has made a successful business out of helping you protect your image on the internet.
A Critique of Keynesian Economics...
Can I just say right now that I adore John Nash?
I'm embarrassed to say that before I watched "A Beautiful Mind" I had no idea who Nash was. And, until our current recessionary woes, I also had never heard of Keynesian Economics. Well, I have now...
The following is an excerpt from a piece (presentation, class materials, etc.) Nash has on file via his faculty website at Princeton:
"Keynesians"
The thinking of J. M. Keynes was actually multidimensional and consequently there are quite different varieties of persons at the present time who follow, in one way or another, some of the thinking of Keynes. And of course SOME of his thinking was scientifically accurate and thus not disputable. For example, an early book written by Keynes was the mathematical text "A Treatise on Probability".
The label "Keynesian" is convenient, but to be safe we should have a defined meaning for this as a party that can be criticized and contrasted with other parties.
So let us define "Keynesian" to be descriptive of a "school of thought" that originated at the time of the devaluations of the pound and the dollar in the early 30's of the 20th century. Then, more specifically, a "Keynesian" would favor the existence of a "manipulative" state establishment of central bank and treasury which would contin-uously seek to achieve "economic welfare" object-ives with comparatively little regard for the long term reputation of the national currency and the associated effects of that on the reputation
of financial enterprises domestic to the state.
And indeed a very famous saying of Keynes was "...in the long run we will all be dead ...".
A Critique of the Science of the Keynesians
It is difficult to make a criticism here because so much of the scientific research work, particularly of American economists, in the years since, say, "the thirties", has been in the area of the study of the topic called "macroeconomics" and most or almost all of this work has a "Keynes-ian" orientation.
I think there is a good analogy to mathematical theories like, for example, "class field theory". In mathematics a set of axioms can be taken as a foundation and then an area for theoretical study is brought into being. For example, if one set of axioms is specified and accepted we have the theory of rings while if another set of axioms is the foundation we have the theory of Moufang loops.
So, from a critical point of view, the theory of macroeconomics of the Keynesians is like the theory of plane geometry without the axiom of Euclid that was classically called the "parallel postulate". (It is an interesting fact in the history of science that there was a time, before the nineteenth century, when mathematicians were speculating that this axiom or postulate was not necessary, that it should be derivable from the others.)
So I feel that the macroeconomics of the Keynesians is comparable to a scientific study of a mathematical area which is carried out with an insufficient set of axioms. And the result is analogous to the situation in plane geometry, the plane does not need to be really flat and the area within a circle can expand hyperbolically as a function of the radius rather than merely with the square of the radius. (This picture suggests the pattern of inflation that can result in a country, over extended time periods, when there is contin-ually a certain amount of gradual inflation.)
Full Version (Click Here)
John F. Nash currently teaches at Princeton University
So you want someone to blame?
The current economic crisis has created a lot of armchair quarterbacks all pointing accusing fingers at precieved culprits. The banks, the Republicans, Democrats, Credit Card companies, your mother in law. Well, here are some folks that I think have an accurate bead on the situation:
Fred on the Economy
(Click here for a link to the site with discussion board stream.
Be sure to spend a bit of time reading through the discussion Fred's video clip fueled. It's an excellent economics primer and philosophical debate.
Here are two of my favorites posts:
just me - bob said:
It's good that this video inspired all of you to voice your opinion and think about the issue. I'm afraid some of you are too hard headed to learn anything from the discussion....The problem is that we don't have enough people creating wealth and you don't do that by flipping houses and selling worthless investments.
Our economy is strong when people focus on making things that other people need and providing services that other people need. It is weakened when schemers suck all the wealth out and spend it on imported consumable goods. The value flows out and is not replaced.
Because of the credit involved, the damage can be done over a period of years before anyone notices. Just circulating more money can stave off the effects for a while longer but at the end of the day we all need to roll up our sleeves and do a good day's work, and repeat that over and over.
And another by Boatman:
boatman said:
I will pretty much bet that those of you who think Fred is full of it has not a dime saved in the bank.
I own a company, one of the last domestic toy manufacturers that manufacturers high dollar products that caters to a male audience in the 30 to 50 year old range. I have been in business for over 25 years and have been through three of these so called "blips", except this one is not a normal blip in the economy. I have watched my business go from no charge cards to some charge cards to 100% charge cards, and now to using two and three charge cards to buy our products, and even, "try this one and if it doesn't go through put so much on this one and so on" There are many people who enjoy our products that under normal circumstances should of either saved for them or simply looked to an alternative lesser hobby, or better yet spent the money on more important things like their family needs.
As a business owner I have been watching this pattern develop slowly since the mid 80's knowing that one day this would lead to the situation we are in today. I also saved money during these times, and that was very hard for a guy like me who loves sports cars and could of pretty much purchased what ever I liked. Instead I would purchase what I thought I could afford, maybe a lesser model, not always what I wanted. Now for today, I did manage to put a good amount of savings away, lost a little bit in the market, but saw that coming last year and moved to what used to be called, constant depreciation accounts. I'll bet my brokers aren't calling them that these days.
The part I didn't count on was my two sons coming back and wanting to work in now our family business. You see I couldn't save enough to carry them through these tough times so I am doing everything in my power to make this business continue for their sake. I have also explained to them how no matter how bad you want something you can't live day by day fullfilling all your whims living on spending credit, because there will come a day that you have to pay the piper. I feel that day is here and now. It's time to stop passing the blame, our government is not at fault for our lack of control, no one from Washington has a firm grip on your hand forcing you to swipe your credit cards, or sign your name on the bottom line. I am 48 years old, and never had a major credit card out side of an AMEX corporate card, (you have to pay those kind in full monthly). They make it too easy and lessen your thought and reasoning process. Quick decisions usually come back and bite you in the ass. So I think we should all listen to Freds warning and take it serious, maybe cool it for a bit and get back on track to what is really important in life. If we all would realize our personal limitations and live within them "our means" we can and will get out of this mess. It's quality of life that matters not quantity.
So, there you go...Economics for the Layman. And this is why social media and the internet provide an opportunity to learn and communicate - and yes - even debate ad nauseum - about things that really matter. The real test comes when we see who uses new information to change the way they do things (hopefully, for the better.)
Spending? Stimulus? I prefer Suzy Orman's "Save Yourself" philosophy, thank you very much.
The Edge of the Envelope...
<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; It's time to get kindling for the fire split and stock piled so I don't have to go hunting for it at dusk in my slippers. And it's definitely time to pour meaningful thought into my blogs. I've been negligent not because of a lack of potential content, but because I needed to implement some efficiency maneuvers and strategies in my life. Fact is, I've been getting TOO MUCH DONE.
I'm not just making this up. I've been pretty good over the past few years at gathering up tools, ideas, strategies, excellent little gems of advice from mentors, etc. to enable me to GET MORE DONE! Unfortunately, in my naivete - though I was getting SO MUCH MORE DONE - I filled up those glorious new time slots by frenetically committing myself to do even more things. And thus...an explanation for my absence here. Also an explanation for my dismal (and needless) exhaustion. Damn efficiency! (Right?) No. Damn hyper, obsessive productivity. My bad.
If you drape thirty-nine iron chains around your arms and shoulders and then do a dance, the whole point of the dance will be to seem light and effortless. (Robert Francis)
I'm coming back at this efficiency and productivity issue from an entirely different perspective...working smarter, not harder, while keeping an emphasis on balance. Or, to put it in designer terms (as in "Life Designer")...I've committed myself to protecting my personal White Space.
I just returned from visiting with my daughters and while resting on a bench in the womb of a steamy Japanese Communal Women's bath it occurred to me how whole I felt when I nurtured my body. At that moment, with my thighs becoming one with the slats of the bench, epiphanies erupted like blue fireworks. Not about nurturing my body, but bringing effortless answers to some of the heaviest burdens I'd been carrying around on my shoulders.
There, dripping wet, no capture tools, just me dripping wet on a wooden bench...and epiphanies were illuminating the way forward. Finally, what I consider the most profound epiphany emerged ~ When I take time to physically take care of my body, my mind has the freedom to soar. Simple.
And I realized a simple response was called for...
"Thank you"...
Spring on the Rogue...
Emily and I created a video documentary. I want to have the ability to thoroughly explain a subject and then add my own images. Yes, I am a photojournalist and an experienced reporter.
I supposed I was "spoiled" at the beginning of my professional career because I had the opportunity to work as a general assignment reporter for small rural papers where "general" meant I did just about everything, but definitely both writing and shooting my own pieces. When I did a stint at the Medford Mail Tribune I was confined to writing exclusively and I often ground my teeth to see the images the photog assigned to my pieces came up with. Why? Because I thought I could do better. I saw things differently as the writer of the piece. And I had an image portfolio to prove I could shoot. I don't know why they wouldn't let me shoot my own images other than maybe it was some kind of union issue.
So, about writing "shorts" versus features - I choose features and book length projects. I think I'll leave the "short writing" to those organizational writing "whiz kids" who have the patience for it. I don't. I supposed I better get my ass in gear and do that then, eh?
Archiving...
I'm in the process of creating an archive for my writing over the past 24 years. I have an image gallery set up (link to the right). Need to spend some time populating that an my writing archive.
What do we do? That makes sense to me since that’s the interface we have with others and the world. However, I also realize the two aren’t inextricably linked. “What we do” is only a descriptor, an onramp, an invitation to others to “come into our parlor” and get acquainted with us.
So, welcome to my parlor…
I just love that term. It reminds of the old bordellos of the past with rich velvet drapery, lanterns, a fireplace … and lots of lace. Look closer and there are tears in the lace, stains on the old furniture, burns in the carpet and everyone ends of disappearing down the hallway somewhere to “do their business.” Hmmm, business intrigues me. So does that hallway. There are so many doors.
I’m not suggesting that I’ve made a career out of visiting old whore houses. It’s an apt metaphor for what has plagued me my whole life…I just can’t stop wondering what’s down that hallway, around that corner, across that ocean, …what’s happening in that boardroom, behind that desk, behind that brain.
What I do…
I have almost completed my task of raising four wonderful, beautiful, incredibly challenging, and sometimes maddeningly difficult children. That was my first and most important job.
Okay, my first job was actually dusting hardware in the lumberyard my father managed while I was growing up in Idaho. But, obviously - beyond introducing me to work ethic - that wasn’t as important as raising children.
My journalism career started in 5th grade at Heyburn Elementary when I launched the school’s first student run newspaper. It was one page, typed on a typewriter (remember those?) and duplicated using an antiquated carbon copy process in the principal’s office. Its main focus was a feature on the school’s librarian – my heroine. The school newspaper archive includes exactly one issue and it lived just long enough for the copies to be distributed to my classmates and thrown in those dull grey garbage cans by the teachers’ desks. Seeing that first issue in the trash was crushing for me. I wanted to know that people actually read it. I think that was where I first added “apathy” to my knowledge base. It’s also when I started getting tough psychologically when it came to journalism.
The last time I remember shedding tears in front of a keyboard was in my “Beginning Reporting” class at Humboldt State University. Howard Seamann put an end to those tears. “What the hell you cryin’ about?” I looked up to see Howard looking down at me with a half grin, half good natured scowl. That’s where I learned to separate criticism of my journalistic work from personal criticism aimed to hurt me. That’s also where I started to understand that, if “they” can make me cry and run away because of hurt feelings, that elusive hallway stays a mystery and I would never get to peek (sometimes gawk) through those doorways. Howard Seamann’s Beginning Reporting class is where I learned to stand firm and keep asking questions when politicians and people in power turn on the attack mode and suggest that I’m an imbecile for asking such probing and “stupid” questions.
“Yes, sir. I understand your frustration, sir. But, if you could just be patient with me, I would really like to understand…(etc. etc. etc.).”
…Excuse me sir, I’m headed down that hall now…so, if you’ll kindly step aside…
I am a scribe.
Scribe: (or Scrivener) is an ancient profession, a person who could read and write. This usually indicated secretarial and administrative duties such as dictation and keeping business, judicial, and history records for rulers such as kings, nobility, temples, and cities.
I don’t write fiction, though I’ve tried. I see what is out in the world…or inside myself…and I write about it. I’ve always seen my role as a scribe and journalist as creating a bridge from one place of understanding to another. And it has never failed that, in the process of writing, I emerge on the other side with a new understanding of my world and my relationship to it.
Writing has taken me to some phenomenal places geographically and definitely some disconcerting places socially, psychologically and emotionally. Human Interest stories are my particular area of interest, though I’ve spent most of more than two decades of a journalistic career covering what my industry calls “General Assignment Reporting.”
The stories that get me riled (and so…get me engaged) have tended to be those involving abuse of government power, invasion of personal and property rights, environmental abuses, human and animal abuses and financial ignorance and stupidity. Well, stupidity has always interested me, since it seems to be a source of great suffering for many, especially when it’s combined with greed. However, the stories that have touched my heart the deepest and in the most lasting way have been the Human Interest stories.
I’ll be sharing some of those stories with you here. Because they’re good. And because a good story deserves to be retold. And last…because I’m a scribe and the best history needs to be kept alive. And that’s my job…
